In 2027, the city will reconstruct Interlachen Boulevard from Blake Road to Mirror Lakes Drive. According to the project's website, the new design will include a sidewalk and painted, unprotected, bike lanes. The city should build a cycle track (grade separated bike lane) on Interlachen. Interlachen is a critical east/west connector in Northwest Edina, providing connections to the new Blake Road Green Line station, the Blake School, Interlachen Country Club, Highlands Elementary, Todd Park, Highlands Park, and the Grandview District. Importantly, any child who lives north of Interlachen must bike on Interlachen to get to school. A cycle track would allow those of all ages and abilities living near Interlachen to navigate to safely navigate to these landmarks by bike.
According to the project's website, the final design will be complete in November 2026 and a public hearing will take place in December 2026. Early input is critical to ensuring our voices are heard. In 2027, the city is planning to reduce Vernon Avenue from two lanes to one from Interlachen Boulevard to Eden Avenue. The city plans to extend the 10’ sidewalks it recently constructed on Vernon over Highway 100 to this western section of Vernon. We believe that the city should instead build a cycle track adjacent to a sidewalk (like on Cedar Lake Road in St. Louis Park). Separating cyclists and pedestrians is important because it reduces cyclist and pedestrian conflicts. That is especially the case here where Vernon serves the Grandview business district and sees a healthy mix of pedestrians and cyclists. A cycle track is also more welcoming to cyclists than a sidewalk. We are simply asking the city for a different color of concrete.

While we continue to push for better infrastructure on a project by project basis, we are also looking for ways to improve our network today. One promising option we’ve identified is Bike Streets. The map for Edina has recently been added and we see it as helping us accomplish two things:
