LAB Survey & General Updates

League of American Bicyclists Survey

City staff has applied to be recognized as a bike-friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists. Edina has previously been recognized as a Bronze Level community. This is a great chance for city staff to see if their self-assessment matches the assessment from the community at large. Please take 5 minutes to fill out the survey with your honest opinion.

Action Step. Fill out the survey by September 8th.

EBA General Updates

We have been incredibly encouraged by the start to our organization! In our first three months, we've had over 120 members join our newsletter, appeared in multiple local newspapers, and seen some inspiring advocacy across several mediums.

It's been amazing to see so many different stories, perspectives, and voices come together in support of safer streets. That diversity is our greatest strength. There isn't one "right" message; what matters are the authentic experiences that only you can share. Every email, every conversation, and every story helps paint a fuller picture of why this work matters. EBA member Mel Bernstein said it best in their Substack post, it "does not need to be perfect. It just needs to be sent." So don't overthink it. Share your story. Your voice matters, and together our voices are making a difference.

We wanted to share just a couple highlights of those voices today.

Bike Streets Low Stress Map

While we are currently advocating on a project-by-project basis and will soon pursue a holistic approach to making our streets safer (stay tuned), we are also looking for ways to improve our network today. One promising option we’ve identified is Bike Streets. The map for Edina has recently been added and we see it as helping us accomplish two things:

1) Share hyper local knowledge of the best ways to bike around in the absence of true infrastructure. Many of us know the lowest stress streets and the best cut-throughs in our own neighborhood. Let’s share them!

2) Identifying the biggest gaps in our system to focus our advocacy effots.

We encourage you to look at the Bike Streets map, log your rides, and suggest low stress routes near you.
